This Secret Weapon Against Anxiety Will Surprise You

We've all heard the benefits of probiotics are plentiful. You've bought the fifty dollar bottles, you've eaten yogurt, and you've tried kimchi (which is the best btw). BUT did you know that there are probiotics that live in the soil that you get from simply breathing outside and getting dirty? This is the type of health advice we can all get behind: breath. Rebrand that as "probiotic breath-work fasting" and you've got a whole business to add to the wellness industry.

One probiotic that is being explored by researchers is called mycobacterium vaccae and it is taking home all the trophies for the changes it is making to the hosts' mental health.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in May, found that when healthy mice were injected with a heat-killed preparation of Mycobacterium vaccae and placed with a larger aggressive male for 19 days they exhibited less anxiety or fear-like behaviors and behaved more proactively around their aggressor. They were also 50 percent less likely to suffer stress-induced colitis (as measured by cellular damage to the colon) and showed less system-wide inflammation.

Meanwhile, treatment with M. vaccae increased expression of tph2, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. Previous studies have shown that M. vaccae increases serotonin in the prefrontal cortex, which modulates anxiety.

So, this bacteria goes into the body and makes you less anxious and happy? It's like tequila but really really small and doesn't make you text all your exes "i mIssS u".

There is currently only one product on the market with mycobacterium vaccae in it and we highly suggest trying it out!
